With the development of information science and technology, many practical processes such as those relevant to the industrial system, transportation system, electronic system, biological system, and remote sensing system have undergone significant changes. These processes generate and store huge amounts of process data at every time instant of every day, containing all valuable state information of process operations and equipment. Using those data, both on-line and off-line, to directly predict the trend, evaluate performance and make decisions for complex system, would be very significant, especially under the lack of accurate supervision. However, due to the complexity of system and limitation of sensing technology, such as high dimension, nonlinearity, heterogeneity, and uncertainty, lead to the ineffectiveness of the existing data processing, analysis, modeling and control algorithms for complex systems. For this reason, one of the main challenges is that how to combine computerized methods and intelligent algorithms to deal with the complex data, and thus provide the effective processing, analysis, modeling and control methods for complex systems both in theory and application.
This special issue is focusing on the latest development, trends, and novel techniques of intelligent data processing, analysis and control algorithms in complex systems and their applications. The principal topics planned to be covered are as follows, but are not limited to:
- Image processing and pattern recognition;
- Data processing and knowledge discovery;
- Intelligent data processing and analysis;
- Intelligent modelling and optimization;
- Fuzzy clustering;
- Theory for security and cybernetics;
- Intelligent control theory for complex systems;
- Applications related to the above topics;
Dr. Shi-Yuan Han received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and technology from the Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China, in 2009 and 2012, respectively. From 2011 to 2012, he had been a Visiting Scholar with the School of EECS, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, QLD, Australia. In 2012, he joined the University of Jinan, Jinan, China. His current research interests include the areas of fault tolerant control, vibration control, intelligent transportation systems, time-delay systems, evolutionary computation, networked control systems, and their applications in suspension systems.
Dr. Jin Zhou (Member, IEEE) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in software engineering from Shandong University, Jinan, China, in 1998 and 2001, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in software engineering from the University of Macau, Macau, China, in 2014. He is currently a Professor with the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Network Based Intelligent Computing, University of Jinan, Jinan. His current research interests include intelligent transportation systems, evolutionary computation, and other machine learning techniques and their applications in suspension systems.

Papers submitted for special sessions will be peer-reviewed with the same criteria as used with regular papers. A special session proposal should include the session title, a brief description, and the names, contact details and bio-sketch of the organizers.

Accepted papers will be published in the Springer Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) proceedings (EI Compendex). Some high-quality papers will be recommended for possible publication in SCI indexed international journals after expansion and further review, such as Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy (MPCE), Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control (TIMC), Enterprise information system (EIS), Frontiers In Energy Research, Cognitive Computation, Journal of Control and Decision, Advances in Manufacturing (AIM), etc.
